Have you ever heard about how relationships go through “dry spells”? Or if you are in a relationship, have you ever experienced one of these times? The relationship may just feel kind of stale. It kind of feels like nothing exciting is happening or the spark has gone out. If that’s you – I’m here to tell you not to worry. It can be hard to get out of your comfort zone and your normal routine. In fact, it is pretty well known that nearly 40% of couples married for the first time eventually get divorced.
So how do you and your partner stay in a place that is healthy and connected? It can become so easy in this day and age to be stagnant so you have to change it up. A few studies that have been completed in the past few decades have found the same thing time and again – when couples get out of their comfort zone and try new and exciting things, they have healthier and more satisfying relationships.
So how do you do that? Try something out of your comfort zone and watch your relationship improve.
Take A Class Together
When you and your partner enroll in a new class together, you both step into an unfamiliar situation. Whether it’s a workout, cooking, or art class, you’re both learning something new. Such new experiences can rekindle the emotions you felt at the start of your relationship. As you experience these familiar feelings, they often bring back memories of earlier times. This is one way to step out of your comfort zone and reconnect with your partner.
Travel Together
Traveling to a new place is very similar to trying a new activity. It can reignite the same emotions of being in a new and exciting environment. Being in a new place gives you and your partner the ideal setting to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Research on how couples stay connected found that after a couple completed what they identified as an ‘exciting task’, they saw a positive change in how happy they were with each other.
Do Anything Outside Your Comfort Zone
Traveling together or taking classes together might not feel very different for you. Perhaps you do those things already. Find something that will push you out of your comfort zone! Maybe you’d choose something more extreme like skydiving, cliff jumping or maybe just make a change in your routine – happy hour after work or spontaneous date night, anyone? The research found that engaging in activities with your partner that are outside your usual routine and comfort zone will enhance your relationship quality.
With all the information and research in hand, it’s now up to you and your partner to take action. It’s time to try something new! Don’t let boredom in your relationship be an excuse to not doing anything differently. Let it be a catalyst to a better and more positive life together.
