As Father’s Day approaches the thought of leaving a powerful legacy begins to circulate and enter my mind. I think of the legacy my father and his father before him left to us. Some foundational pieces to life like: be a person of strong faith, be a hard worker, have compassion for your fellow man, always do your best and be a person of integrity.
Typically we see mothers as the compassion and comfort in a home, teaching lessons of day to day life. Traditionally, the father’s legacy was that of more character building and deeper life lessons. Leaving a legacy can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. Some see a legacy as financial security, character traits, inherited traits or even career choices. This may leave you wondering how to begin to leave a legacy. The most important thing is what you do with your life. Many people claim to hold certain beliefs but act differently. It is very valuable to live your life the way that you wish to be remembered. The old addage “do what I say, not what I do” does not work when trying to leave a legacy. It is time to do some soul searching. Ask yourself what part of the life you are living now would you want the next generation to emulate. To leave a powerful legacy of hard work and generosity, it’s essential to embody these qualities in all aspects of your life. As often as you can, do the thing you want to pass on. Be that person always and in all things.
Do what you are passionate about for a powerful legacy.
It is difficult to consistently pour into leading a life that you are not passionate about. Explore your life to identify what truly excites you, and pursue that. Do not try to leave a legacy that someone thinks you should.
Talk to and spend time with your children.
It is vitally important for you to spend time with the ones that you are wanting to leave a powerful legacy. You should talk with them, play with them and model behaviors for them. Children pick up what is presented to them, leaving a meaningful legacy takes spending time with our children on a regular basis and share with them what is important to you.
Use different forms of media.
A well-rounded artist can create using various forms of media. Make sure you are being creative in sharing how you want to leave your legacy. They will see what is important to you if it is apart of every aspect of your life.
Everything is a learning experience.
There is no such thing as failure here. Use any misstep as a chance to re-evaluate and try again to live the life that you want. The best way to leave a powerful legacy is to keep on keeping on, don’t quit trying, and remember that at the end of the day, the best legacy to leave is one that demonstrates love.
